چکیده

Smart cards is a security technology that is becoming more and more popular. As a result, they are targets of criminals who wish to break their encryption in order to abuse what they protect. One form of attacks that can be used is the differential fault attack (DFA). This report will cover what are DFA’s, how they can be carried out against a smart card and solutions that can defend such an attack.

Fault Attacks on RSA with CRT: Concrete Results and Practical Countermeasures

This article describes concrete results and practically validated countermeasures concerning differential fault attacks on RSA using the CRT. We investigate smartcards with an RSA coprocessor where any hardware countermeasures to defeat fault attacks have been switched off. This scenario was chosen in order to analyze the reliability of software countermeasures. We start by describing our labor...

Differential Fault Attacks on Elliptic Curve Cryptosystems

In this paper we extend the ideas for differential fault attacks on the RSA cryptosystem (see [4]) to schemes using elliptic curves. We present three different types of attacks that can be used to derive information about the secret key if bit errors can be inserted into the elliptic curve computations in a tamper-proof device. The effectiveness of the attacks was proven in a software simulatio...

CRT RSA Algorithm Protected Against Fault Attacks

Embedded devices performing RSA signatures are subject to Fault Attacks, particularly when the Chinese Remainder Theorem is used. In most cases, the modular exponentiation and the Garner recombination algorithms are targeted. To thwart Fault Attacks, we propose a new generic method of computing modular exponentiation and we prove its security in a realistic fault model. By construction, our pro...

Security Analysis of AES Using Functionality Fault Model

Security of cryptographic circuits is a major concern. Smartcards are targeted by sophisticated attacks like fault attacks that combine physical disturbance and cryptanalysis. We propose a methodology and a tool (PAFI) to analyse the robustness of circuits under fault attacks using fault injection in simulation. The number of injection is reduced by taking into account the function of the latch...

Practical Fault Countermeasures for Chinese Remaindering Based RSA

Most implementations of the widely-used RSA cryptosystem rely on Chinese remaindering (CRT) as this greatly improves the performances in both running times and memory requirements. Unfortunately, CRT-based implementations are also known to be more sensitive to fault attacks: a single fault in an RSA exponentiation may reveal the secret prime factors trough a GCD computation, that is, a total br...
